i watched american hardcore today, and while it was great to watch, my day has sucked since the ending credits rolled. eighties hardcore has always been pretty incredible to me, that every single aspect of it was about nothing. really no one was looking for a record deal, or to be played on the radio, they just wanted to scream out their angst for a while and get sweaty, and maybe punch a few cops. beautiful, no?
anyway, i got all worked up about how great and brilliant it was, and then they did that thing towards the end where they show clips of old ian mackayes and henry rollins's talking about punk being over, and it was something that could never happen again, how 81-85 was the brief time that magic could happen. then someone or other with bad facial hair said something along the lines of:
it went on for a few years and the kids went wild, and then it was over. sooner or later something else will happen that the kids will go wild about again.
this begs the question: WHAT THE HELL WILL THAT BE? WHERE? WHEN?
i've realized lately that all i want to do is rock journalism, but there is nothing happening that i want to write about. couldn't i have been around in 77 for punk? or 81 for hardcore? or hell, like, 87 for grunge? not to sound like the whiney suburban kid that i am, but there is nothing happening. right? am i missing something, or is rolling stone really all there is, and is it not the most predictable publication around?
i can't even imagine what there could be that would be terrifying enough to slaughter through the creativity suck that is pop culture right now.
